Year-End Zakat Assistance to Support Low-Income Households

Muis Enhances Assistance with Highest Disbursement of $4.3 Million and Increased Educational Support for Children in 2024

24 December 2024

1. The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) has disbursed a total of $4.3 million in a special Year-End Disbursement (YED) assistance payout to more than 6,000 low-income households. This supplementary disbursement complements the regular monthly zakat financial assistance that Muis beneficiaries receive, ensuring continued support for vulnerable families during the year-end period.

Additional Support for Year-End Expenses

2. The YED aims to alleviate the financial strain on low-income households, helping them manage critical year-end expenses such as accumulated bills, outstanding payments, and loans. For families with school-going children, the disbursement offers much needed support to prepare for the upcoming school year, covering expenses like school supplies and uniforms. Since its introduction in 2012, this initiative has been an important feature of Muis’ efforts to support zakat beneficiaries in managing financial stress during this period.

Increased Support for Education for Children of Zakat Beneficiaries

3. We are pleased to announce an enhancement to the Reqab assistance scheme this year. The support has been increased from the previous range of $70-$100 per child to a standardised rate of $150 per child. This adjustment underscores our dedication to supporting the educational needs of our zakat beneficiaries' children.

4. As an integral component of Muis' Zakat Financial Assistance programme, the Reqab scheme aims to alleviate the financial burden of school-related expenses. It covers essential items such as uniforms, books, and other necessary supplies, ensuring that children are well-equipped for a strong start to their academic year. A sum of $1.28 million has been earmarked for this enhanced support, benefiting approximately 8,500 children aged 18 and under. This increase aims to equip children with essential resources for the new school year, alleviating financial pressure on their families. Eligible zakat beneficiaries will receive notification by post this week.

Zakat Strengthens the Community

5. This Year-End Disbursement reflects the strong community support and generosity underpining Muis’ zakat assistance programs. Through zakat contributions, Muis not only addresses immediate needs but also invests in the long-term development of vulnerable families and their children. This dual approach ensures both short-term relief and sustainable progress for those in need.

6. The enhancement of Reqab assistance aligns with Muis’ mission to provide comprehensive support for low-income households. This initiative reflects a dual focus: addressing immediate financial pressures whilst fostering long-term empowerment. By prioritising education and developmental needs, Muis is building a foundation for a more resilient and empowered community. This initiative is part of Muis’ broader effort to ensure that zakat contributions achieve a meaningful and lasting impact for the community’s most vulnerable members.
