MEDIA STATEMENT
31 May 2021
1. On 11 May 2021, the Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura ("Muis") and Madrasah Irsyad Zuhri Al-Islamiah ("the Madrasah") were alerted to a leakage of a confidential email from the Madrasah's email server to unauthorised third parties. Under the Administration of Muslim Law Act, Muis has the statutory function and duty to administer all religious schools in Singapore.
2. After an internal investigation, Muis and the Madrasah found that a staff of the Madrasah had downloaded numerous confidential documents from the Madrasah's email server without proper authorisation. Following an interview with the said staff, the Madrasah made a police report on the unauthorised transfer of the Madrasah’s confidential documents to third parties. The staff has resigned from the Madrasah with immediate effect. As this matter is currently under police investigations, the Madrasah is unable to provide further details on this matter.
3. The Madrasah notes that some of the confidential documents that have been leaked pertain to an ongoing review of the financial transactions of the Madrasah that Muis is undertaking as stated in the reply to a Parliamentary Question raised on the financial transactions between the Madrasah and Irsyad Trust Limited ("ITL") on 5 April 2021. Muis would like to reiterate that it takes any allegations of financial irregularities very seriously and is undertaking the necessary steps to look into the matter.
4. The Madrasah has reminded staff that any confidential information, including information containing personal data, must be safeguarded at all times. In addition, staff have been strongly advised to go through the proper channels if they have any information and details to share relating to the ongoing investigations.
