 CONDUCTING FUNERAL PRAYERS DURING PHASE TWO

Introduction

1. This advisory (irsyad) is an update of the previous one, dated 10 April 20201. It includes additional safety measures that one must adhere to when conducting funeral prayers during phase 2, as we continue the battle against COVID-19. These additional measures are as stated below:

i. The number of people managing the funeral rites must be kept to the minimum at all times. 

ii. Funeral prayers that are conducted at homes should adhere to the prevailing gathering size limits of up to five visitors to each household at any one time, as issued by Ministry of Health. In addition, the prayers at homes must be conducted in accordance with the safe distancing measures, and if there are space constrains, the family of the deceased is advised to contact the designated mosques to conduct the funeral prayers instead.

iii. For funeral prayers conducted at designated mosques2, in addition to complying with the safety measures implemented at the mosques like safe entry check-in, temperature checks, health and travel declaration, the following measures should also be adhered to:

a)    families to contact the mosques to check if there are any available spaces to conduct the funeral prayers;

b)    no funeral prayers are to be conducted during congregational prayers;

c)    the number of people attending the prayers should not exceed 30 (excluding the imam leading the prayer) at a time;

d)    funeral prayers can be conducted over a maximum of 2 sessions;

e)    practise safe distancing and don the face mask at all times.

iv. Only a maximum of 30 attendees (excluding funeral and religious workers) may be involved in the burial at the cemetery.

v. If the family wishes to read the tahlil after the funeral at home, ensure that the tahlil are limited to only 5 individuals from other households (including the invited Ustaz/Imam).

2. These measures are necessary precautions to ensure the safety and health of the public, and to prevent the continuing spread of the disease. May Allah s.w.t. bless the soul of those deceased in these challenging times and places them in the highest ranks of His servants. Amin.
